Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are not normal. If your gums bleed, then you should contact your dentist right away. Bleeding gums are not always caused by gum disease and may be the result of a more serious medical condition. Here are the most common reasons for bleeding gums and how you can resolve this problem.

Causes of Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are caused by a number of different conditions. However, all of the causes are serious and should be addressed. If your gums bleed as a result of rough cleaning, due to improper brushing technique or brushing with a toothbrush that is firmer than your gums can handle, you should work with your dentist to fix these issues. Over time, rough cleaning can result in a condition known as a gingival recession. Your teeth may also start to move or become overly sensitive.

In some cases, bleeding gums may be due to a serious medical condition or inflammation that has affected another part of the body. Research has found an association linking bleeding gums to heart disease and stroke.

It has been suggested that gum disease may contribute to heart disease because bacteria from infected gums can dislodge, enter the bloodstream, attach to blood vessels and increase clot formation. It has also been suggested that inflammation caused by gum disease may also trigger clot formation. Clots decrease blood flow to the heart, thereby causing an elevation in blood pressure and increasing the risk of a heart attack.

Diabetic patients are also at a higher risk of developing inflammation in the gums.

How to Stop Bleeding Gums

The best way to address it is to seek treatment from your dentist. Your gums will need to be professionally diagnosed in order to find the root cause of the problem, since they may not always be the result of an oral condition.

Bleeding Gums Is a Sign That Something Is Wrong

Healthy gums don’t bleed. If your gums are bleeding, there could be a number of different reason why. Contacting your dentist to schedule an appointment should be the first step. Your dentist may recommend a course of periodontal treatment if he believes you have gum disease. With periodontal treatment, a deep cleaning is required in order to remove the bacteria and other debris that is infecting your teeth.
